Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 15: The Demigods Appeal to the Lord for Protection
Text 1.15.9

ऋषीन्यक्षान्सगन्धर्वानसुरान्ब्राह्मणांस्तथा।
अतिक्रामति दुर्धर्षो वरदानेन मोहितः॥

ṛṣīn yakṣān sagandharvān asurān brāhmaṇāṁs tathā
atikrāmati
durdharṣo vara-dānena mohitaḥ

ṛṣīn = sages; yakṣān = yakṣas; sagandharvān = gandharvas; asurān = asuras like Rāhu; brāhmaṇān = the brāhmaṇas; tathā = and; atikrāmati = tramples over and torments; durdharṣaḥ = that unassailable one; vara-dānena = because of having obtained a boon from you; mohitaḥ = senseless.

Senseless because of having obtained a boon from you, that unassailable one tramples over and torments sages, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras like Rāhu, and the brāhmaṇas.

NOTE. Rāvaṇa exhibited all of the primary characteristics of a demon, which have been enlisted in Bhagavad-gītā 16.4 as:

dambho darpo ‘bhimānaś ca krodhaḥ pāruṣyam eva ca
ajñānaṁ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadam āsurīm

“Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance—these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Pṛthā.”
