Chapter 17: Brahmā Orders the Demigods to Incarnate and Assist Rāma

बृहस्पतिस्त्वजनयत्तारं नाम महाहरिम्।
सर्ववानरमुख्यानां बुद्धिमन्तमनुत्तमम्॥
bṛhaspatis tv ajanayat tāraṁ nāma mahā-harim
sarva-vānara-mukhyānāṁ buddhimantam anuttamam
bṛhaspatiḥ tu = Bṛhaspati; ajanayat = gave birth; tāram = Tāra; nāma = named; mahā-harim = to a great monkey; sarva-vānara-mukhyānām = among the chiefs of all monkeys; buddhimantam = in intelligence; anuttamam = who was unrivalled.
Bṛhaspati gave birth to a great monkey named Tāra who was unrivalled in intelligence among the chiefs of all monkeys.
1 This Tāra is not to be confused with Tārā, the wife of Vālī.
Tāra was unrivalled in intelligence since he was the son of Bṛhaspati.1
