Chapter 20: Daśaratha Refuses to Give Rāma
Text 1.20.28

तयोरन्यतरेणाहं योद्धा स्यां ससुहृद्गणः।
अन्यथा त्वनुनेष्यामि भवन्तं सहबान्धवः॥

tayor anyatareṇāhaṁ yoddhā syāṁ sasuhṛd-gaṇaḥ
anyathā
tv anuneṣyāmi bhavantaṁ saha-bāndhavaḥ

tayoḥ = of them; anyatareṇa = with one; aham = I; yoddhā syām = can fight; sa-suhṛd-gaṇaḥ = with my well-wishers; anyathā tu = otherwise; anuneṣyāmi = I will follow; bhavantam = you; saha-bāndhavaḥ = with my friends and relatives.

With my well-wishers, I can fight with one of them. Otherwise, I will follow you with my friends and relatives.1

1 Regarding this and the previous verses, it appears that King Daśaratha already knew about Mārīca and Subāhu because he is mentioning herewith details that Viśvāmitra didn’t mention so far.
