Text 1.20.29

iti nara-pati-jalpanād dvijendraṁ
kuśika-sutaṁ sumahān viveśa manyuḥ
suhuta
iva samidbhir ājya-siktaḥ
samabhavad ujjvalito maharṣi-vahniḥ

iti nara-pati-jalpanāt = because of the incoherent talk of the king; dvija-indram = the best of the twice-born; kuśika-sutam = Viśvāmitra, the son of Kuśika; sumahān viveśa manyuḥ = became extremely angry; suhutaḥ = a sacrificial fire; iva = just as; samidbhiḥ = fed by sacrificial wood [blazes]; ājya-siktaḥ = when ghee is poured into it; samabhavat ujjvalitaḥ = blazed [upon hearing the king’s words]; mahā-ṛṣi-vahniḥ = the fire of the great sage’s anger.

Because of the incoherent talk of the king, the best of the twice-born, Viśvāmitra, the son of Kuśika, became extremely angry.1 Just as a sacrificial fire fed by sacrificial wood [blazes] when ghee is poured into it, the fire of the great sage’s anger blazed [upon hearing the king’s words].

This is a brief description of what will be described in the next chapter.

1 Literally, “Very great anger entered into the son of Kuśika.”
