Chapter 24: The History of Sarayū
Text 1.24.6

अथ रामः सरिन्मध्ये पप्रच्छ मुनिपुङ्गवम्।
वारिणो भिद्यमानस्य किमयं तुमुलो ध्वनिः॥

atha rāmaḥ sarin-madhye papraccha muni-puṅgavam
vāriṇo
bhidyamānasya kim ayaṁ tumulo dhvaniḥ

atha rāmaḥ = Śrī Rāmacandra; sarit-madhye = in the midst of the river; papraccha = inquired from; muni-puṅgavam = the best of sages; vāriṇaḥ = of the waters of two rivers; bhidyamānasya = coming together; kim = is; ayam = this; tumulaḥ = the loud; dhvaniḥ = sound.

In the midst of the river, Śrī Rāmacandra inquired from the best of sages, “Is this the loud sound of the waters of two rivers coming together?”

Or is the sound caused by something else? This was Lord Rāma’s inquiry.
