Chapter 32: The History of Kuśanābha and His Daughters
Text 1.32.8
सुमागधी नदी रम्या मगधान्विश्रुताययौ
पञ्चानां शैलमुख्यानां मध्ये मालेव शोभते
sumāgadhī nadī ramyā magadhān viśrutāyayau
pañcānāṁ śaila-mukhyānāṁ madhye māleva śobhate
sumāgadhī = as the beautiful Māgadhī; nadī = that river; ramyā = pleasant; magadhān = to the land of the Magadhas; viśrutā = famous; āyayau = has come to; pañcānām śaila-mukhyānām = the five great mountains; madhye = amidst; mālā iva = like a garland; śobhate = it shines.
That pleasant river famous as the beautiful Māgadhī has come to the land of the Magadhas. It shines like a garland amidst the five great mountains.
1 And it went back to the land of the Magadhas through the five great mountains. Therefore, it has been compared to a garland.
Śoṇā is itself referred to as the Māgadhī for it has come from the land of the Magadhas.1
