Chapter 33: Kuśanābha’s Daughters marry Brahmadatta
Text 1.33.11
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु चूली नाम महामुनिः।
ऊर्ध्वरेताः शुभाचारो ब्राह्मं तप उपागतम्॥
etasminn eva kāle tu cūlī nāma mahā-muniḥ
ūrdhva-retāḥ śubhācāro brāhmaṁ tapa upāgatam
etasmin eva kāle tu = at this time; cūlī nāma mahā-muniḥ = the great sage named Cūlī; ūrdhva-retāḥ = who had practiced unbroken celibacy; śubha-ācāraḥ = and auspicious behavior; brāhmam tapaḥ = spiritual austerity; upāgatam = engaged in.
At this time, a great sage named Cūlī who had practiced unbroken celibacy and auspicious behavior engaged in spiritual austerity.
Etasminn eva kāle indicates that Cūlī was a contemporary of Kuśanābha. Brāhmam tapaḥ indicates that he had taken up Vedic austerities in order to realize the Supreme Brahman.1
