Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 34: Satyavatī, Viśvāmitra’s Elder Sister
Text 1.34.11
सा तु सत्यवती पुण्या सत्ये धर्मे प्रतिष्ठिता।
पतिव्रता महाभागा कौशिकी सरितां वरा॥
sā tu satyavatī puṇyā satye dharme pratiṣṭhitā
pati-vratā mahā-bhāgā kauśikī saritāṁ varā
sā tu = and that; satyavatī = Satyavatī; puṇyā = is pious; satye = of truthfulness; dharme = in the dharma; pratiṣṭhitā = established; pati-vratā = chaste to her husband; mahā-bhāgā = greatly fortunate; kauśikīḥ = in the form of Kauśikī; saritām = of river; varā = the best.
And that Satyavatī is pious, established in the dharma of truthfulness, chaste to her husband, greatly fortunate and in the form of Kauśikī, the best of rivers.
1 “Satyavatī” literally means truthful. In other words, she was established in the Vedic dharma of truthfulness.
This verse explains the reasons for Satyavatī’s name.1
