Chapter 34: Satyavatī, Viśvāmitra’s Elder Sister
Text 1.34.18

नैशानि सर्वभूतानि प्रचरन्ति ततस्ततः।
यक्षराक्षससङ्घाश्च रौद्राश्च पिशिताशनाः॥

naiśāni sarva-bhūtāni pracaranti tatas tataḥ
yakṣa-rākṣasa-saṅghāś
ca raudrāś ca piśitāśanāḥ

naiśāni = nightly; sarva-bhūtāni = all creatures; pracaranti = are wondering; tataḥ tataḥ = here and there; yakṣa-rākṣasa-saṅghāḥ = hordes of yakṣa and rakṣasas; ca = as well as; raudrāḥ = fierce; ca = and; piśita-aśanāḥ = blood-drinking.

Hordes of fierce and blood-drinking yakṣas and rakṣasas as well as all nightly creatures are wandering here and there.

Nightly creatures are owls and others who flourish at night. Viśvāmitra’s sacrifice was completed on Pūrṇimā. They had departed on Dvitīyā. The moon had risen 96 minutes after sunset.
