Chapter 35: The History of Gaṅga
Text 1.35.22
उग्रेण तपसा युक्तां ददौ शैलवरः सुताम्।
रुद्रायाप्रतिरूपाय उमां लोकनमस्कृताम्॥
ugreṇa tapasā yuktāṁ dadau śaila-varaḥ sutām
rudrāyāpratirūpāya umāṁ loka-namaskṛtām
ugreṇa = with terrible; tapasā = austerities; yuktām = who was endowed with; dadau = gave away; śaila-varaḥ = Himavān, the best of the mountains; sutām = his daughter; rudrāya = to Lord Rudra; apratirūpāya = who was pleased with her; umām = daughter Umā; loka-namaskṛtām = and who was respected by the whole world.
Himavān, the best of the mountains, gave away his daughter Umā who was respected by the whole world to Lord Rudra who was pleased with her for she was endowed with terrible austerities.
