कथं गङ्गा त्रिपथगा विश्रुता सरिदुत्तमा।
त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मज्ञ कर्मभिः कैः समन्विता॥
kathaṁ gaṅgā tri-pathagā viśrutā sarid-uttamā
triṣu lokeṣu dharmajña karmabhiḥ kaiḥ samanvitā
katham = how; gaṅgā = Gaṅgā; tri-pathagā = traversing the three worlds; viśrutā = did become famous; sarit-uttamā = as the best of rivers; triṣu = in the three; lokeṣu = worlds; dharmajña = O knower of Vedic dharma; karmabhiḥ kaiḥ samanvitā = what did she do while.
O knower of Vedic dharma, what did she do while traversing the three worlds? How did Gaṅgā become famous in the three worlds as the best of rivers?
