Chapter 42: Bhagīratha’s Austerities for Gaṅgā’s Descent
Text 1.42.14-15

तस्य वर्षसहस्राणि घोरे तपसि तिष्ठतः।
अतीतानि महाबाहो तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः।
सुप्रीतो भगवान्ब्रह्मा प्रजानां पतिरीश्वरः॥

tasya varṣa-sahasrāṇi ghore tapasi tiṣṭhataḥ
atītāni
mahā-bāho tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ
suprīto bhagavān brahmā prajānāṁ patir īśvaraḥ

tasya = while he; varṣa-sahasrāṇi = a thousand years; ghore = in terrible; tapasi = austerities; tiṣṭhataḥ = was situated; atītāni = past; mahā-bāho = O mighty-armed; tasya = with that; rājñaḥ = King Bhagīratha; mahā-ātmanaḥ = great soul; suprītaḥ = became very happy; bhagavān brahmā = Lord Brahmā; prajānām = of the universal populace; patiḥ = the master; īśvaraḥ = and controller.

O mighty-armed, while he was situated in terrible austerities, a thousand years passed. Lord Brahmā, the master and controller of the universal populace, became very happy with that great soul, King Bhagīratha.
