Chapter 42: Bhagīratha’s Austerities for Gaṅgā’s Descent
Text 1.42.18
तम् उवाच महातेजाः सर्वलोकपितामहम्।
भगीरथो महाभागः कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः॥
tam uvāca mahā-tejāḥ sarva-loka-pitāmaham
bhagīratho mahā-bhāgaḥ kṛtāñjalir upasthitaḥ
tam = him; uvāca = told [the following]; mahā-tejāḥ = and greatly powerful; sarva-loka-pitāmaham = the grandfather of all worlds; bhagīrathaḥ = Bhagīratha; mahā-bhāgaḥ = the greatly fortunate; kṛta-añjaliḥ = with his palms joined in submission; upasthitaḥ = approached.
The greatly fortunate and greatly powerful Bhagīratha approached the grandfather of all worlds with his palms joined in submission and told him [the following.]
Bhagīratha was greatly powerful, that is, of unbounded power because of his austerities.
