Chapter 43: Gaṅgā Descends to the Earth
Text 1.43.1

देवदेवे गते तस्मिन्सोऽङ्गुष्ठाग्रनिपीडिताम्।
कृत्वा वसुमतीं राम संवत्सरमुपासत॥

deva-deve gate tasmin so ’ṅguṣṭhāgra-nipīḍitām
kṛtvā
vasumatīṁ rāma saṁvatsaram upāsata

deva-deve = god of the gods; gate = after departed; tasmin = that; saḥ = Bhagīratha; aṅguṣṭha-agra-nipīḍitām kṛtvā = pressed with his toe and; vasumatīm = the earth; rāma = O Rāma; saṁvatsaram = for a year; upāsata waited [for Lord Śiva].

O Rāma, after that god of the gods departed, Bhagīratha pressed the earth with his toe and waited [for Lord Śiva] for a year.

This chapter describes how Gaṅgā came to flood the sons of Sagara and thus deliver them to Svarga.
