Chapter 44: Bhagīratha Delivers his Uncles
Text 1.44.17-18

भगीरथोऽपि राजर्षिः कृत्वा सलिलमुत्तमम्।
यथाक्रमं यथान्यायं सागराणां महायशाः॥

कृतोदकः शुची राजा स्व-पुरं प्रविवेश ह।
समृद्धार्थो नर-श्रेष्ठ स्व-राज्यं प्रशशास ह॥

bhagīratho ’pi rāja-rṣiḥ kṛtvā salilam uttamam
yathā-kramaṁ
yathā-nyāyaṁ sāgarāṇāṁ mahā-yaśāḥ

kṛtodakaḥ śucī rājā sva-puraṁ praviveśa ha
samṛddhārtho
nara-śreṣṭha sva-rājyaṁ praśaśāsa ha

bhagīrathaḥ api = Bhagīratha; rāja-ṛṣiḥ = the saintly king; kṛtvā = having completed salilam = the final rites; uttamam = properly; yathā-kramam = in the prescribed order; yathā-nyāyam = as appropriate; sāgarāṇām = for the sons of Sagara; mahā-yaśāḥ = of great fame; kṛta-udakaḥ = [and] then having offered water to other deceased souls; śuciḥ = became pure; rājā = the king; sva-puram= his city; praviveśa ha = then entered; samṛddha-arthaḥ = having achieved his purpose; nara-śreṣṭha = O best of men; sva-rājyam = his kingdom; praśaśāsa ha= he then ruled over.

Having properly completed the final rites for the sons of Sagara and then having offered water to other deceased souls in the prescribed order as appropriate, the saintly King Bhagīratha of great fame became pure. The king then entered his city. O best of men, having achieved his purpose, he then ruled over his kingdom.
