Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 44: Bhagīratha Delivers his Uncles
Text 1.44.20
एष ते राम गङ्गाया विस्तरोऽभिहितो मया।
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते सन्ध्याकालोऽतिवर्तते॥
eṣa te rāma gaṅgāyā vistaro ’bhihito mayā
svasti prāpnuhi bhadraṁ te sandhyā-kālo ’tivartate
eṣaḥ = thus; te = to you; rāma = O Rāma; gaṅgāyāḥ = about Gaṅgā; vistaraḥ = in detail; abhihitaḥ = have narrated; mayā = I; svasti = prosperity; prāpnuhi = may you attain; bhadram te = [and] auspiciousness sandhyā-kālaḥ = dusk; ativartate = it is passed.
O Rāma, I have thus narrated in detail about Gaṅgā to You. May You attain prosperity and auspiciousness. It is past dusk.
Sage Viśvāmitra then concluded the discussion. “May You attain auspiciousness” is a standard expression. Because it was already past dusk, it would not be appropriate for Lord Rāma to ask the sage more questions.
