Chapter 44: Bhagīratha Delivers his Uncles
Text 1.44.9
तथैवांशुमता तात लोकेऽप्रतिमतेजसा।
गङ्गां प्रार्थयता नेतुं प्रतिज्ञा नापवर्जिता॥
tathaivāṁśumatā tāta loke ’pratima-tejasā
gaṅgāṁ prārthayatā netuṁ pratijñā nāpavarjitā
tathā eva = also; aṁśumatā = Aṁśumān; tata = my dear child; loke = in the world; apratima-tejasā = though filled with unparalleled prowess; gaṅgām = her; prārthayatā = though he sought; netum= to bring; pratijñā = his promise [to bring Gaṅgā]; na = not; apavarjitā = could fulfill.
My dear child, though filled with unparalleled prowess in the world, Aṁśumān could also not fulfill his promise [to bring Gaṅgā] though he sought to bring her.
