Chapter 45: The Churning of the Milk Ocean
Text 1.45.50
ये गताभिमुखं विष्णुमक्षयं पुरुषोत्तमम्।
सम्पिष्टास्ते तदा युद्धे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना॥
ye gatābhimukhaṁ viṣṇum akṣayaṁ puruṣottamam
sampiṣṭās te tadā yuddhe viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā
ye = who; gata-abhimukham = went to face; viṣṇum = the all-pervading; akṣayam = and infallible; puruṣa-uttamam = Supreme Personality of Godhead; sampiṣṭāḥ = were crushed by Him; te tadā = those asuras; yuddhe = in battle; viṣṇunā = Viṣṇu; prabhaviṣṇunā = the Almighty.
Those asuras who went to face in battle the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the infallible Lord Viṣṇu, were crushed by Him, the Almighty Viṣṇu.
Akṣayam (“infallible”) indicates that Lord Viṣṇu is free from the six transformations, [unlike material entities that] take birth (jāyate), grow (vivardhate), exist for some time (asti), produce by-products (pariṇamate), dwindle (apakṣīyate) and die (vinaśyati). Puruṣottamam indicates that He is supreme among all conscious beings.
In some manuscripts, saṁviṣṭāḥ appears in place of sampiṣṭāḥ. Saṁviṣṭāḥ is the same as āviṣṭāḥ (“empowered”). It then refers to the demigods who surrendered unto Lord Viṣṇu. They were empowered by Him.
