Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 46: Diti’s vow to kill Indra
Text 1.46.16

एवमुक्त्वा दितिः शक्रं प्राप्ते मध्यं दिवाकरे।
निद्रयापहृता देवी पादौ कृत्वाथ शीर्षतः॥

evam uktvā ditiḥ śakraṁ prāpte madhyaṁ divākare
nidrayāpahṛtā
devī pādau kṛtvātha śīrṣataḥ

evam uktvā = after spoke thus; ditiḥ = Diti; śakram = to Indra; prāpte madhyam divākare = when the sun was in the middle of the sky; nidrayā apahṛtā = was overcome by sleep; devī = the goddess; pādau kṛtvā = while she placed her feet; atha śīrṣataḥ = towards her head.

After Diti spoke to Indra thus, when the sun was in the middle of the sky, the goddess was overcome by sleep while she placed her feet towards her head.

Because one cannot sleep on the bed during the daytime, she was overcome by sleep while sitting on a seat. Her head was bent downwards towards her feet.
