Chapter 46: Diti’s vow to kill Indra
Text 1.46.5
एवं भवतु भद्रं ते शुचिर्भव तपोधने।
जनयिष्यसि पुत्रं त्वं शक्रहन्तारमाहवे॥
evaṁ bhavatu bhadraṁ te śucir bhava tapo-dhane
janayiṣyasi putraṁ tvaṁ śakra-hantāram āhave
evam bhavatu = alright; bhadram te = may there be auspiciousness unto you; śuciḥ bhava = be pure; tapaḥ-dhane = O one whose wealth is austerity; janayiṣyasi putram tvam = You will give birth to a son; śakra-hantāram = who will kill Indra; āhave = in battle.
Alright. O one whose wealth is austerity, may there be auspiciousness unto you. Be pure. You will give birth to a son who will kill Indra in battle.
1 Diti was instructed to maintain standards of purity until a son is born.
“Be pure” means “Be pure till your son is born.”1
