Chapter 47: King Sumati Approaches Viśvāmitra
Text 1.47.4
वातस्कन्धा इमे सप्त चरन्तु दिवि पुत्रक।
मारुता इति विख्याता दिव्यरूपा ममात्मजाः॥
vāta-skandhā ime sapta carantu divi putraka
mārutā iti vikhyātā divya-rūpā mamātmajāḥ
vāta-skandhāḥ = predominating deities of the regions of the wind; ime = these; sapta = as the seven; carantu = may wander about; divi = in the heavens; putraka = my son; mārutāḥ iti = by the name “Mārutas”; vikhyātāḥ = famous; divya-rūpāḥ = with divine forms; mama ātmajāḥ = sons of mine.
My son, may these sons of mine wander about in the heavens with divine forms as the seven predominating deities of the regions of the wind famous by the name “Mārutas.”
Marut refers to the wind. As presiding deities of the wind, Diti’s seven sons would be famous by the name “Mārutas.” [When Indra had cut the embryo into seven,] he requested them, mā rudaḥ (“Don’t cry!”) and therefore they would be famous by the name “Mārutas.”
