Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 49: Lord Rāmacandra Delivers Ahalyā
Text 1.49.2

कुर्वता तपसो विघ्नं गौतमस्य महात्मनः।
क्रोधमुत्पाद्य हि मया सुरकार्यमिदं कृतम्॥

kurvatā tapaso vighnaṁ gautamasya mahātmanaḥ
krodham
utpādya hi mayā sura-kāryam idaṁ kṛtam

kurvatā tapasaḥ vighnam = by obstructing the austerities; gautamasya = Gautama; mahā-ātmanaḥ = of the great soul; krodham utpādya hi = and making him angry; mayā sura-kāryam idam kṛtam = I have carried out the mission of the demigods.

By obstructing the austerities of the great soul Gautama and making him angry, I have carried out the mission of the demigods.

Indra intended to convey, “Gautama’s austerities can cause us to fall from our positions. That can be obstructed if he falls prey to anger. Therefore, I have committed adultery with his wife.”
