¹ Every brāhmaṇa in Vedic civilization is expected to perform five sacrifices daily: (a) brahma-yajña: to honor the Supreme Being by studying and teaching of Vedic scriptures, (b) deva-yajña: to honor demigods by offering them appropriate offerings, (c) pitṛ-yajña: to honor forefathers by offering them appropriate offerings, (d) nṛ-yajña: to honor human beings with food, and (e) bhūta-yajña: to honor other creatures with food.
