Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 55: King Viśvāmitra Obtains Divine Weapons
Text 1.55.18

एवमस्त्विति देवेशो वाक्यमुक्त्वा गतस्तदा॥

evam astv iti deveśo vākyam uktvā gatas tadā

evam = thereupon; astu iti = alright; deva-īśaḥ = the Lord of the devas; vākyam uktvā = saying; gataḥ tadā = disappeared.

Thereupon, saying, “Alright,” the Lord of the devas disappeared.

NOTE. King Viśvāmitra took shelter of the demigod Lord Śiva because of his own lack of spiritual intelligence, for he wanted to childishly win over sage Vasiṣṭha. In this regard, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes, “Less intelligent people who have lost their spiritual sense take shelter of demigods for immediate fulfillment of material desires. Generally, such people do not go to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because they are in the lower modes of nature (ignorance and passion) and therefore worship various demigods. Following the rules and regulations of worship, they are satisfied.” (Bhagavad-gītā 7.20 purport)
