Chapter 56: King Viśvāmitra Decides to Become a Brāhmaṇa
Text 1.56.5
तस्यास्त्रं गाधिपुत्रस्य घोरमाग्नेयमुत्तमम्।
ब्रह्मदण्डेन तच्छान्तमग्नेर्वेग इवाम्भसा॥
tasyāstraṁ gādhi-putrasya ghoram āgneyam uttamam
brahma-daṇḍena tac chāntam agner vega ivāmbhasā
tasya = of the; astram = weapon; gādhi-putrasya = son of Gādhi; ghoram = terrible; āgneyam = Āgneya; uttamam = excellent; brahma-daṇḍena = by Vasiṣṭha’s brahminical staff; tat = the; śāntam = was quenched; agneḥ = of fire; vegaḥ = the force; iva = just as; ambhasā = [is quenched] by water.
Just as the force of fire [is quenched] by water, the excellent and terrible Āgneya weapon of the son of Gādhi was quenched by Vasiṣṭha’s brahminical staff.
