phala-mūlāśano dāntaś cacāra paramaṁ tapaḥ
athāsya jajñire putrāḥ satya-dharma-parāyaṇāḥ
haviṣyando madhuṣyando dṛḍhanetro mahārathaḥ
phala-mūla aśanaḥ = subsisting on fruits and roots; dāntaḥ = restraining his senses; cacāra = he performed; paramam = the most rigid; tapaḥ = austerities; atha = then; asya = to him; jajñire = were born; putrāḥ = four sons; satya-dharma-parāyaṇāḥ = absorbed in truthfulness and adherence to dharma; haviṣyandaḥ = Haviṣyanda; madhuṣyandaḥ = Madhuṣyanda; dṛḍhanetraḥ = Dṛḍhanetra; mahārathaḥ = and Mahāratha.
Subsisting on fruits and roots, restraining his senses, he performed the most rigid austerities. Then, four sons absorbed in truthfulness and adherence to dharma were born to him: Haviṣyanda, Madhuṣyanda, Dṛḍhanetra and Mahāratha.
The author thus reveals that lust, anger and other unwanted attitudes persisted in Viśvāmitra. Therefore, his austerity yielded a dull result.
