Chapter 57: King Triśaṅku’s Desire
Text 1.57.4-5

पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम्॥

जिता राजर्षिलोकास्ते तपसा कुशिकात्मज।
अनेन तपसा त्वां तु राजर्षिरिति विद्महे॥

pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu brahmā loka-pitāmahaḥ
abravīn
madhuraṁ vākyaṁ viśvāmitraṁ tapo-dhanam

jitā rāja-rṣi-lokās te tapasā kuśikātmaja
anena
tapasā tvāṁ tu rāja-rṣir iti vidmahe

pūrṇe = when had been completed; varṣa-sahasre tu = a thousand years [of austerity]; brahmā = Lord Brahmā; loka-pitāmahaḥ = the grandsire of all the worlds; abravīt = spoke; madhuram vākyam = sweet words; viśvāmitram = to Viśvāmitra; tapaḥ-dhanam = rich with austerity; jitāḥ = have conquered; rāja-ṛṣi-lokāḥ = the worlds of the saintly kings; te = you; tapasā = through your austerities; kuśika-ātmaja = O son of Kuśika; anena tapasā = because of your austerities; tvām tu = you; rāja-ṛṣiḥ iti = as a rājarṣi, a saintly king; vidmahe = we recognize.

When a thousand years [of austerity] had been completed, the grandsire of all the worlds, Lord Brahmā, spoke sweet words to Viśvāmitra rich with austerity: O son of Kuśika, through your austerities, you have conquered the worlds of the saintly kings. We recognize you as a rājarṣi, a saintly king, because of your austerities.
