Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 58: King Triśaṅku Cursed
Text 1.58.13

तं दृष्ट्वा मन्त्रिणः सर्वे त्यज्य चण्डालरूपिणम्।
प्राद्रवन्सहिता राम पौरा येऽस्यानुगामिनः॥

taṁ dṛṣṭvā mantriṇaḥ sarve tyajya caṇḍāla-rūpiṇam
prādravan
sahitā rāma paurā ye ‘syānugāminaḥ

tam dṛṣṭvā = seeing him; mantriṇaḥ sarve = all of his ministers; tyajya = rejected him and; caṇḍāla-rūpiṇam = in the form of a caṇḍāla; prādravan = ran away; sahitāḥ = together; rāma = O Rāma; paurāḥ ye asya anugāminaḥ = followers in the city.

O Rāma, seeing him in the form of a caṇḍāla, all of his ministers and followers in the city rejected him and ran away together.1

1 They understood that Triśaṅku had attained the status of a caṇḍāla by birth, which is due to loss of pious credits, which is due to some severe sinful activity or offense. They considered that by associating with him, they might also engage in such activities and then lose their pious credits like him.
