Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.28

तां सत्यनामां दृढतोरणार्गलां गृहैर्विचित्रैरुपशोभितां शिवाम्।
पुरीमयोध्यां नृसहस्रसङ्कुलां शशास वै शक्रसमो महीपतिः॥

tāṁ satya-nāmāṁ dṛḍha-toraṇārgalāṁ
gṛhair
vicitrair upaśobhitāṁ śivām
purīm ayodhyāṁ nṛ-sahasra-saṅkulāṁ
śaśāsa
vai śakra-samo mahī-patiḥ

tām = that; satya-nāmām = true to its name; dṛḍha-toraṇa-argalām = with firmly fastened doorways; gṛhaiḥ = of houses; vicitraiḥ = with a variety; upaśobhitām = beautified with; śivām = auspicious; purīm = city; ayodhyām = Ayodhyā; nṛ-sahasra-saṅkulām = it was filled with thousands of men; śaśāsa vai = ruled over; śakra-samaḥ = like Indra; mahī-patiḥ = the king.

Like Indra, the king ruled over that auspicious city Ayodhyā that was true to its name. With firmly fastened doorways, beautified with a variety of houses, it was filled with thousands of men.
