Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.6

तस्मिन्पुरवरे हृष्टा धर्मात्मानो बहुश्रुताः।
नरास्तुष्टा धनैः स्वैः स्वैरलुब्धाः सत्यवादिनः॥

tasmin pura-vare hṛṣṭā dharmātmāno bahu-śrutāḥ
narās tuṣṭā dhanaiḥ svaiḥ svair alubdhāḥ satya-vādinaḥ

tasmin = in that; pura-vare = excellent city; hṛṣṭā = were happy; dharma-ātmānaḥ = dhārmika by nature; bahu-śrutāḥ = learned in many scriptures; narāḥ = the men; tuṣṭāḥ = satisfied with; dhanaiḥ = wealth; svaiḥ svaiḥ = with their respective; alubdhāḥ = not greedy; satya-vādinaḥ = and truthful in speech.

In that excellent city, the men were happy, dhārmika by nature, learned in many scriptures, satisfied with their respective wealth, not greedy and truthful in speech.

The author then points out the results of his administration from texts 6 to 20.

The people were happy in the city because of residing happily. They were not hankering for others’ wealth. They only accepted as much wealth as is appropriate for their specific varṇa and āśrama. They did not hanker for more wealth than what they had already acquired.
