Chapter 63: Viśvāmitra Falls Prey to Lust
Text 1.63.1

पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु व्रतस्नातं महामुनिम्।
अभ्यगच्छन्सुराः सर्वे तपःफलचिकीर्षवः॥

pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu vrata-snātaṁ mahā-munim
abhyagacchan
surāḥ sarve tapaḥ-phala-cikīrṣavaḥ

pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu = after a thousand years; vrata-snātam mahā-munim = when the great sage completed his vow; abhyagacchan = appeared to him; surāḥ = the demigods; sarve = all of them; tapaḥ-phala-cikīrṣavaḥ = desired to award the result of his austerities.

When the great sage completed his vow after a thousand years, the demigods appeared to him. All of them desired to award the result of his austerities.

Because Viśvāmitra had cursed his sons cruelly, it is understood that he had not yet conquered anger. Therefore, he was not awarded the status of a brahmarṣi and recognized as such [by authorities headed by Lord Brahmā]. This is pointed out in this chapter.
