Chapter 68: Daśaratha Delighted
Text 1.68.14

एवं विदेहाधिपतिर्मधुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत्।
विश्वामित्राभ्यनुज्ञातः शतानन्दमते स्थितः।
इत्युक्त्वा विरता दूता राजगौरवशङ्किताः॥

evaṁ videhādhipatir madhuraṁ vākyam abravīt
viśvāmitrābhyanujñātaḥ
śatānanda-mate sthitaḥ
ity
uktvā viratā dūtā rāja-gaurava-śaṅkitāḥ

evam = those; videha-adhipatiḥ = the ruler of Videha; madhuram = sweet; vākyam = words; abravīt = had spoken; viśvāmitra-abhyanujñātaḥ = permitted by Viśvāmitra; śatānanda-mate sthitaḥ = and abiding by the opinion of Śatānanda; iti uktvā = after speaking thus; viratāḥ = stopped; dūtāḥ = Janaka’s messengers; rāja-gaurava-śaṅkitāḥ = out of fear and respect for the king.

Permitted by Viśvāmitra and abiding by the opinion of Śatānanda, the ruler of Videha had spoken those sweet words. Out of fear and respect for the king, Janaka’s messengers they stopped after speaking thus.1

1. The messengers were frightened that they might be deemed talking unnecessarily, and so out of respect for the king, they stopped talking.
