Chapter 70: Rāma’s Noble Lineage
Text 1.70.20
विवस्वान्कश्यपाज्जज्ञे मनुर्वैवस्वतः स्मृतः।
मनुः प्रज्पतिः पूर्वमिक्ष्वाकुस्तु मनोः सुतः॥
vivasvān kaśyapāj jajñe manur vaivasvataḥ smṛtaḥ
manuḥ prajā-patiḥ pūrvam ikṣvākus tu manoḥ sutaḥ
vivasvān = Vivasvān; kaśyapāt = of Kaśyapa; jajñe = was born of; manuḥ = Manu; vaivasvataḥ smṛtaḥ = was known as the son of Vivasvān; manuḥ = Manu; prajā-patiḥ pūrvam = was formerly a Prajāpati; ikṣvākuḥ tu = Ikṣvāku; manoḥ sutaḥ = was the son of Manu.
Vivasvān was born of Kaśyapa.1 Manu was known as the son of Vivasvān. Manu was formerly a Prajāpati. Ikṣvāku was the son of Manu.
1. Vivasvān is the predominating deity of the sun, more commonly known as Sūrya. Lord Rāma appeared in his lineage, the Sūrya-vaṁśa.
