Chapter 71: Sītā’s Noble Lineage
Text 1.71.1

एवं ब्रुवाणं जनकः प्रत्युवाच कृताञ्जलिः।
श्रोतुमर्हसि भद्रं ते कुलं नः परिकीर्तितम्॥

evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ janakaḥ pratyuvāca kṛtāñjaliḥ
śrotum
arhasi bhadraṁ te kulaṁ naḥ parikīrtitam

evam bruvāṇam = to Vasiṣṭha who had spoken thus; janakaḥ = Janaka; pratyuvāca = replied; kṛtāñjaliḥ = with his palms joined in supplication; śrotum arhasi = please listen; bhadram te = may there be auspiciousness unto you; kulam naḥ = about our lineage; parikīrtitam = which I will describe.

With his palms joined in supplication, Janaka replied to Vasiṣṭha who had spoken thus: May there be auspiciousness unto you. Please listen about our lineage, which I will describe.

When Vasiṣṭha had described the [auspicious] lineage of the bridegrooms and accepted the brides for Them, Janaka informed him of the purity of his lineage and promised to give his daughters in charity.
