Chapter 72: Daśaratha’s Charity Before the Wedding

Text 1.72.1

तमुक्तवन्तं वैदेहं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः।
उवाच वचनं वीरं वसिष्ठसहितो नृपम्॥

tam uktavantaṁ vaidehaṁ viśvāmitro mahā-muniḥ
uvāca vacanaṁ vīraṁ vasiṣṭha-sahito nṛpam

tam uktavantam = when Janaka spoke thus; vaideham = Janaka; viśvāmitraḥ = Viśvāmitra; mahā-muniḥ = the great sage; uvāca = spoke; vacanam = the following words; vīram = the heroic; vasiṣṭha-sahitaḥ = with the approval of Vasiṣṭha; nṛpam = to king.

When Janaka spoke thus, the great sage Viśvāmitra, with the approval of Vasiṣṭha, spoke the following words to the heroic King Janaka.

This chapter describes that Viśvāmitra accepted the two daughters of Kuśadhvaja for Bharata and Śatrughna respectively and that the go-dāna ceremony was conducted.
