Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 76: Lord Rāma Strings Lord Viṣṇu’s bow
Text 1.76.7

इमां पादगतिं राम तपोबलसमार्जिताम्।
लोकानप्रतिमान्वा ते हनिष्यामि यदिच्छसि॥

imāṁ pāda-gatiṁ rāma tapo-bala-samārjitām
lokān
apratimān te haniṣyāmi yad icchasi

imām = the; pāda-gatim = movement of your feet; rāma = O Rāma; tapaḥ-bala-samārjitām = earned by the strength of your austerity; lokān = worlds [you have earned through your austerity]; apratimān = attainment of the unparalleled; = or; te = your; haniṣyāmi = I will destroy; yat icchasi = [tell Me] which of the two you desire.

O Rāma, I will destroy the movement of your feet earned by the strength of your austerity or your attainment of the unparalleled worlds [you have earned through your austerity]. [Tell Me] which of the two you desire.

[In some manuscripts, instead of yad icchasi,] yadīcchasi (“if you desire”) appears. This reading is [also] appropriate.1 Lord Rāma intended to tell him, “You are constrained in either way: you will have to be in one place [only] or your [attainment of the] worlds [through your austerity] will be destroyed.”

1 The meaning would then be, “O Rāma, I will destroy the movement of your feet earned by the strength of your austerity or, if you desire, [I will destroy] your attainment of the unparalleled worlds [you have earned through your austerity].”
