Chapter 7: Mantharā Instructs Kaikeyī to Stop the Coronation
Text 2.7.10
विदीर्यमाणा हर्षेण धात्री तु परया मुदा।
आचचक्षेऽथ कुब्जायै भूयसीं राघवश्रियम्॥
vidīryamāṇā harṣeṇa dhātrī tu parayā mudā
ācacakṣe ’tha kubjāyai bhūyasīṁ rāghava-śriyam
vidīryamāṇā = became overwhelmed; harṣeṇa = in happiness; dhātrī tu = Rāma’s foster mother; parayā = in great; mudā = joy; ācacakṣe = she told; atha = then; kubjāyai = the hunchback; bhūyasīm = abundant; rāghava-śriyam = about Rāghava’s prosperity.
Rāma’s foster mother became overwhelmed in happiness. In great joy, she then told the hunchback about Rāghava’s abundant prosperity.
1 And she had forgotten herself in spiritual delight.
Rāma’s foster mother’s excessive joy from within expressed itself outside on her face and so on. She now got someone to share her joy with and therefore told the hunchback about Rāghava’s abundant good fortune, that is, the royal prosperity about to be handed over to Rāghava. Though Mantharā was unfavorable [to Kausalyā] and [hence] not to be spoken to, Rāma’s foster mother spoke [about the coronation] to Mantharā because she was in extreme bliss.1
1. And she had forgotten herself in spiritual delight.
