Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 8: The Conversation Between Kaikeyī and Mantharā
Text 2.8.22

भविता राघवो राजा राघवस्यानु यः सुतः।
राजवंशात्तु कैकेयि भरतः परिहास्यते॥

bhavitā rāghavo rājā rāghavasyānu yaḥ sutaḥ
rāja-vaṁśāt tu kaikeyi bharataḥ parihāsyate

bhavitā = will become; rāghavaḥ = the descendant of Raghu; rājā = king; rāghavasya = Rāghava’s; anu = the next; yaḥ = who; sutaḥ = will be son; rāja-vaṁśāt = from the royal lineage; tu = but; kaikeyi = Kaikeyī; bharataḥ = Bharata; parihāsyate = will be banished.

Kaikeyī, the descendant of Raghu who will be Rāghava’s son will become the next king. But Bharata will be banished from the royal lineage.1

1. That Bharata would be banished from the royal lineage certainly made Kaikeyī highly insecure.

Mantharā now denies Kaikeyī’s assertion in text 16 that Bharata would get the kingdom [after Rāma]. She states her reason in the next verse.

1 That Bharata would be banished from the royal lineage certainly made Kaikeyī highly insecure.
