Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 13: Kaikeyī Rejects Daśaratha’s Sorrowful Plea
Text 2.13.11

सुखानामुचितस्यैव दुःखैरनुचितस्य च।
दुःखं नामानुपश्येयं कथं रामस्य धीमतः॥

sukhānām ucitasyaiva duḥkhair anucitasya ca
duḥkhaṁ nāmānupaśyeyaṁ kathaṁ rāmasya dhīmataḥ

sukhānām = happiness; ucitasya = who deserves; eva = only; duḥkhaiḥ = unhappiness; anucitasya = does not deserve; ca = and; duḥkham nāma = unhappiness; anupaśyeyam = do I have to see constant; katham = why; rāmasya = Rāma; dhīmataḥ = for the intelligent.

Why do I have to see constant unhappiness for the intelligent Rāma who only deserves happiness and does not deserve unhappiness?1

1 Sukhānām is in the grammatical plural in Sanskrit, indicating that Śrī Rāma only deserves to experience various kinds of happiness.
