Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 13: Kaikeyī Rejects Daśaratha’s Sorrowful Plea
Text 2.13.14

अकीर्तिरतुला लोके ध्रुवः परिभवश्च मे॥

akīrtir atulā loke dhruvaḥ paribhavaś ca me

akīrtiḥ = infamy; atulā = incomparable; loke = in the world; dhruvaḥ = certainly; paribhavaḥ = humiliation; ca = and; me = I will have to experience.

Certainly I will have to experience incomparable infamy and humiliation in the world.

NOTE. As it will be revealed later, Daśaratha’s problem was that he expected happiness from Kaikeyī because of his addiction to her. Such expectations are naturally problematic because one can do good to oneself only when he realizes that all he needs to do is serve Lord Viṣṇu without any expectation of material happiness.

Prabhupāda explains this as follows:

When a man sees only frustration in his expectations, he thinks, ‘Why am I here?’ Everyone is interested in himself and his own welfare. No one is interested in the Supreme Self.... One’s real self-interest lies in Viṣṇu, or Kṛṣṇa. The conditioned soul forgets this, and therefore suffers material pains. (Bhagavad-gītā 1.30 purport)
