Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 13: Kaikeyī Rejects Daśaratha’s Sorrowful Plea
Text 2.13.16
सात्रियामा तथार्तस्य चन्द्रमण्डलमण्डिता।
राज्ञो विलपमानस्य न व्यभासत शर्वरी॥
sātriyāmā tathārtasya candra-maṇḍala-maṇḍitā
rājño vilapamānasya na vyabhāsata śarvarī
sā = the; atriyāmā = long; tathā = thus; ārtasya = who suffered; candra-maṇḍala-maṇḍitā = decorated with the disc of the moon;
rājñaḥ = to the king; vilapamānasya = and lamented; na = not; vyabhāsata = did appear splendid; śarvarī = night.
The long night decorated with the disc of the moon did not appear splendid to the king who suffered and lamented thus.
Atriyāmā indicates that the night was longer than three yāmas, [that is, nine hours].
GLOSS. [Sātriyāmā can be read as sā triyāmā.] Triyāmā means “night,” the time when [the pursuits of] dharma, artha and mokṣa are warded off since it is primarily used for kāma [by materialists].
