Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.11
एवं प्रचोदितो राजा कैकेय्या निर्विशङ्कया।
नाशकत्पाशमुन्मोक्तुं बलिरिन्द्रकृतं यथा॥
evaṁ pracodito rājā kaikeyyā nirviśaṅkayā
nāśakat pāśam unmoktuṁ balir indra-kṛtam yathā
evam = thus; pracoditaḥ = directed; rājā = the king; kaikeyyā = Kaikeyī; nirviśaṅkayā = by the fearless; na aśakat = was unable; pāśam = the noose of truthfulness around him; unmoktum = to loosen; baliḥ = the great Bali; indra-kṛtam = [who was unable to loosen the noose tied around him] by Indra; yathā = like.
Thus directed by the fearless Kaikeyī, the king was unable to loosen the noose of truthfulness around him like the great Bali [who was unable to loosen the noose tied around him] by Indra.
Kaikeyī’s direction to the king was set out in text 9. The great Bali was tied by Indra through Upendra, [that is, Vāmana]. Bali had promised to give Vāmana three steps of land in charity. Fetters [were tied around his feet] for not granting those three steps of land.
