Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 16: Rāma Passes Through the Grand Road to Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.16.32

chatra-cāmara-pāṇis tu lakṣmaṇo rāghavānujaḥ
jugopa bhrātaraṁ bhrātā ratham āsthāya pṛṣṭhataḥ

chatra-cāmara-pāṇiḥ tu = held an umbrella in one hand and a cāmara in another; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; rāghava-anujaḥ = Rāghava’s younger; jugopa = and thus protected from the sun and so on; bhrātaram = His elder brother; bhrātā = brother; ratham = the chariot; āsthāya = got on and; pṛṣṭhataḥ = from the back.

Rāghava’s younger brother Lakṣmaṇa got on the chariot from the back, held an umbrella in one hand and a cāmara in another, and thus protected His elder brother from the sun and so on.

NOTE. With one hand, Lakṣmaṇa held an umbrella over Rāma, and with another hand, He held a cāmara and fanned Rāma.

This is not surprising because as Ananta-śeṣa in Vaikuṇṭha, He serves Lord Nārāyaṇa in so many ways at the same time. This is stated in Stotra-ratna (37):

nivāsa-śayyāsana-pādukāṁśuko-
padhāna-varṣātapa-vāraṇādibhiḥ
śarīra-bhedais tava śeṣatāṁ gatair
yathocitaṁ śeṣa itīrite janaiḥ

“O my Lord, when will I satisfy You and Lakṣmī, who are both seated on the bed of Ananta? Although He is Your transcendental personal expansion, He has accepted Your service in the form of Your residence, bed, sitting place, slippers, garments, pillow, and umbrella. Therefore He is appropriately known by people as Śeṣa.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Ādi 5.120-124) explains the above as follows:

sei ta’ ’ananta’ ’śeṣa’ — bhakta-avatāra
īśvarera sevā vinā nāhi jāne āra

That Ananta Śeṣa is the devotee incarnation of Godhead. He knows nothing but service to Lord Kṛṣṇa.

sahasra-vadane kare kṛṣṇa-guṇa gāna
niravadhi guṇa gā’na, anta nāhi pā’na

With His thousands of mouths He sings the glories of Lord Kṛṣṇa, but although He always sings in that way, He does not find an end to the qualities of the Lord.

sanakādi bhāgavata śune yāṅra mukhe
bhagavānera guṇa kahe, bhāse prema-sukhe

The four Kumāras hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from His lips, and they in turn repeat it in the transcendental bliss of love of Godhead.

chatra, pādukā, śayyā, upādhāna, vasana
ārāma, āvāsa, yajña-sūtra, siṁhāsana

He serves Lord Kṛṣṇa, assuming all the following forms: umbrella, slippers, bedding, pillow, garments, resting chair, residence, sacred thread and throne.

eta mūrti-bheda kari’ kṛṣṇa-sevā kare
kṛṣṇera śeṣatā pāñā ’śeṣa’ nāma dhare

He is thus called Lord Śeṣa, for He has attained the ultimate end of servitude to Kṛṣṇa. He takes many forms for the service of Kṛṣṇa, and thus He serves the Lord.
