Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 17: Rāma Glorified by His well-wishers
Text 2.17.13
न हि तस्मान्मनः कश्चिच्चक्षुषी वा नरोत्तमात्।
नरः शक्नोत्यपाक्रष्टुमतिक्रान्तेऽपि राघवे।।
na hi tasmān manaḥ kaścic cakṣuṣī vā narottamāt
naraḥ śaknoty apākraṣṭum atikrānte ’pi rāghave
na hi = no; tasmāt = away from that; manaḥ = his mind; kaścit1 cakṣuṣī = eyes; vā = or; nara-uttamāt = prince; naraḥ = man; śaknoti = could; apākraṣṭum = take away; atikrānte = had gone far away; api = even; rāghave = when Rāghava.
Even when Rāghava had gone far away, no man could take his mind or eyes away from that prince.
1 Technical note: kaścit naraḥ.
If this was the case with the men, what to speak of the women? And if this was the case when He had gone far away, what could be said about Him being close by? This is the purport of this verse of Śrī Vālmīki.
