Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 18: Kaikeyī Informs Rāma About the two Boons
Text 2.18.9
अन्यदा मां पिता दृष्ट्वा कुपितोऽपि प्रसीदति।
तस्य मामद्य सम्प्रेक्ष्य किमायासः प्रवर्तते॥
anyadā māṁ pitā dṛṣṭvā kupito ’pi prasīdati
tasya mām adya samprekṣya kim āyāsaḥ pravartate
anyadā = at other times; mām = Me; pitā = My father; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; kupitaḥ = when was angry; api = even; prasīdati = he would become happy; tasya = is he; mām = Me; adya = today; samprekṣya = upon seeing; kim = why; āyāsaḥ pravartate = mentally distressed.
“At other times, even when My father was angry, he would become happy upon seeing Me. Why is he mentally distressed upon seeing Me today?”
GLOSS. “Even when My father was angry” means “Even when My father was angry with someone else.” The interpretation [of some commentators] that at other times, Daśaratha would be angry with Rāma in Rāma’s absence should be rejected because Rāma was always an object of Daśaratha’s love—in His presence and absence.
