Chapter 18: Kaikeyī Informs Rāma About the two Boons
Text 2.18.17
कच्चित्ते परुषं किञ्चिदभिमानात्पिता मम।
उक्तो भवत्या कोपेन यत्रास्य लुलितं मनः॥
kaccit te paruṣaṁ kiñcid abhimānāt pitā mama
ukto bhavatyā kopena yatrāsya lulitaṁ manaḥ
kaccit = did; te1 paruṣam = harsh words; kiñcit = any; abhimānāt = out of love; pitā = father; mama = to My; uktaḥ = speak; bhavatyā = you kopena = or anger; yatra = because of which; asya = his; lulitam = is disturbed; manaḥ = mind.
Did you speak any harsh words to My father out of love or anger because of which his mind is disturbed?
1 Technical note: te abhimānāt.
GLOSS. Kaccit te paruṣaṁ kiñcit can also mean “Did My father speak harsh words about you out of anger?”
Abhimānāt: Did Kaikeyī speak harsh words to Rāma’s father out of pride that she was his younger wife?
