Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.10
गच्छन्तु चैवानयितुं दूताः शीघ्रजवैर्हयैः।
भरतं मातुलकुलादद्यैव नृपशासनात्॥
gacchantu caivānayituṁ dūtāḥ śīghra-javair hayaiḥ
bharataṁ mātula-kulād adyaiva nṛpa-śāsanāt
gacchantu ca eva = let go; ānayitum = to bring; dūtāḥ = messengers; śīghra-javaiḥ = with high-speed; hayaiḥ = horses; bharatam = Bharata; mātula-kulāt = from His maternal uncle’s home; adya = today; eva = itself; nṛpa-śāsanāt = on the order of the king.
On the order of the king, let messengers go with high-speed horses today itself to bring Bharata from His maternal uncle’s home.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: mātula-kulāt na vidyate tulā yasya tan mātulaṁ atulaṁ tac ca tat kulaṁ ceti tasmād ity anenāsadṛśa-kula-vāsī bharato na tavānukūlo bhavatīty arthaḥ sūcito bhavati.
GLOSS. Mātula-kulāt indicates that Bharata and the dynasty hosting Him were incomparable and so He would not be favorable to Kaikeyī’s plan.1
