Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.19

तदप्रियमनार्याया वचनं दारुणोदयम्।
श्रुत्वा गतव्यथो रामः कैकेयीं वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥

tad apriyam anāryāyā vacanaṁ dāruṇodayam
śrutvā gata-vyatho rāmaḥ kaikeyīṁ vākyam abravīt

tat = the; apriyam = that were unpleasant; anāryāyāḥ = of that uncivilized woman; vacanam = words; dāruṇa-udayam = and terrible in import; śrutvā = upon hearing; gata-vyathaḥ = was unfazed; rāmaḥ = Rāma; kaikeyīm = to Kaikeyī; vākyam = the following words; abravīt = He then spoke.

Rāma was unfazed upon hearing the words of that uncivilized woman that were unpleasant and terrible in import. He then spoke the following words to Kaikeyī.

GLOSS. Kaikeyī’s words were unpleasant to others, [not to Rāma].
