Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.26

भरतः पालयेद्राज्यं शुश्रूषेच्च पितुर्यथा।
तथा भवत्या कर्तव्यं स हि धर्मस्सनातनः॥

bharataḥ pālayed rājyaṁ śuśrūṣec ca pitur yathā
tathā bhavatyā kartavyaṁ sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ

bharataḥ = Bharata; pālayet = will rule; rājyam = the kingdom; śuśrūṣet = serve; ca = and; pituḥ = Our father; yathā tathā = by which; bhavatyā kartavyam = please do that; saḥ hi = such an activity is in accordance with; dharmaḥ = dharma; sanātanaḥ = the eternal.

Please do that by which Bharata will rule the kingdom and serve Our father. Such an activity is in accordance with the eternal dharma.

GLOSS. [Sa hi dharmaḥ can also be read as sahi-dharmaḥ] indicating that this is the dharma of those who are tolerant [of the disturbances of the body, speech and mind].
