प्रविश्य वेश्मातिभृशं मुदान्वितं समीक्ष्य तां चार्थविपत्तिमागताम्।
न चैव रामोऽत्र जगाम विक्रियां सुहृज्जनस्यात्मविपत्तिशङ्कया॥
praviśya veśmātibhṛśaṁ mudānvitaṁ
samīkṣya tāṁ cārtha-vipattim āgatām
na caiva rāmo ’tra jagāma vikriyāṁ
suhṛj-janasyātma-vipatti-śaṅkayā
praviśya = entered; veśma = [His mother’s] house; atibhṛśam = very intense; mudā-anvitam = it was filled with delight; samīkṣya tām ca artha-vipattim āgatām = He understood that He had lost His prosperity; na ca eva = not; rāmaḥ = Lord Rāmacandra; atra = about it; jagāma vikriyām = He did exhibit any distress; suhṛt-janasya ātma-vipatti-śaṅkayā = because He feared that His well-wishers might then give up their lives.
Lord Rāmacandra entered [His mother’s] house. It was filled with very intense delight. He understood that He had lost His prosperity, but He did not exhibit any distress about it because He feared that His well-wishers might then give up their lives.

He feared that if His well-wishers saw Him in distress, they would give up their lives.
GLOSS. [The last line can be read as: suhṛj janasyātma-vipatti-śaṅkayā] indicating that Rāma had a good heart, [and so He was] worried about the difficulties faced by the people of Daṇḍakāraṇya. [These sages] experienced a calamity due to the opposing army of Khara and Dūṣaṇa that had come upon them even though they did nothing to offend [these rākṣasas]. Janasya can also indicate [that Lord Rāma was thinking about the calamities faced by other] sages.
